Domestic Violence Sentencing (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-27)
​Domestic Violence Sentencing: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:25-27, when a defendant is found guilty of a domestic violence offense, the court may order as a condition of the sentence (either during the period of custodial time and/or the period of probation) that the defendant:

​​“No Contact” Orders: When a defendant is found guilty of an offense involving domestic violence, the Court may order (as a condition of the sentence) that the defendant have no contact with the victim, the victim’s friends, co-workers, or relatives. Contact includes direct verbal or written contact, and also contact through third parties. Violating a “no contact” order can have serious consequences, such as the filing of “Contempt” charges.​

Professional Counseling: The Court may require the defendant to receive professional counseling and provide proof of attendance at professional counseling. Professional counseling can include anger management counseling, batterer’s intervention counseling, and/or substance abuse counseling.

Lifetime Firearms Ban: When a defendant is convicted of a crime involving domestic violence, the defendant is thereafter prohibited from purchasing, owning, possessing, or controlling firearms. The defendant is also prohibited from receiving or retaining a firearms purchasers identification card.​

Domestic Violence Surcharge Fine: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:25-29.4, any defendant convicted of a domestic violence offense is subject to an additional $100 domestic violence fine for each domestic violence offense.
